« Harris Tweed » has been made in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland for hundreds of years. Truly talented weavers, skilled men and women, have perfected their skills and methods of weaving which have been passed down over the generations. The whole process involves many different jobs from wool dyers and blenders to yarn spinners and warpers, cloth finishers, stampers and many more roles in-between.
Since 1993 « Harris Tweed » has been protected by an Act of Parliament which guarantees the highest quality tweed, dyed, spun and handwoven by the islanders in their homes. For each length of cloth to be stamped with the official Orb, every part of the process must be carried out in the Outer Hebrides.
Soft, tactile, breathable, warm, colourful, sustainable, adaptable – while maintaining its heritage of practicality and longevity, « Harris Tweed » today extols all the qualities and virtues of a luxury 21st century fabric.
There are many different designs to choose from – plain twills, traditional herringbones and more complex designs, contemporary and unconventional patterns. « Harris Tweed » comes in well over 600 patterns and several weights: a heavier weight for upholstering and lighter weights suitable for soft furnishings
